Guest blogger: My blind date with Gill Deacon

This one was sent to me by regular Tea Makers commenter and raconteur Allen.
Enjoy.

I had volunteered to be part of a fake studio audience for a new show, in return for … not even so much as a cookie or a T-shirt, let alone the keys to a new car under my seat. But I was keen, and it was a chance to see a television production in action, though we weren’t told what it would be.

After clearing security and the elevator to the 6th(?) floor, we were ushered into a large studio with a set resembling a modern one-room high-rise condo divided into kitchen, living room and an empty play area for activities that required more elbowroom. A still slide of a bright orange background bordered with bamboo branches was duplicated on several monitors, announcing the Gill Deacon Show.

Who?

Two hours later, I still didn’t know jack, but I knew Gill.

Groan though you may, that phrase was as irresistible as Ms. Deacon herself.

A complete stranger, to me at least, here was young yet mature new personality who was genuinely funny, smart, and very with-it. A quick comparison would be to Sandra Bullock. The real Sandra Bullock. Friendly, down to earth, clear-headed, and tough when necessary. And greets most mishaps with a witty, sometimes hilarious, remark. Useful skills in her other life too. We learned she’s married and raising three young boys.

Our tiny audience was strewn along one wall as we watched Gill greet and interview guests in quick segments, covering kids and cellphones, toilet repair, cooking whole fish, re-cycled clothing, and fertility tests you can do at home.

Not exactly the Fifth Estate, but I was actually enjoying myself.

Because Gill is a delight to be with, and the truth is, I’d really like to know how to cook that fish and fix that toilet myself. (hey, did I just hear someone say the word “pussy” while pretending to cough?)

I had really only come to study the crew and the production elements, honestly, and not to write a review.

But I realized if I acted fast, I’d get the scoop before the great Ouimet.

One other thing impressed me even more than Gill and the friendly crew and staff. It was the succession of exceptionally bright and interesting people from everyday walks of life that comprised Gil’s guest list.

Who knew that we had so many outstanding, and talented neighbours in our community? I’m serious.

You can see for yourself starting next week. This cool mama will surprise you.

Now, back to The Hour, and let the revolution begin.

The silence from the blogger grouches was a sufficiently kind gesture, but your comment is … transcendent.
Ouimet is of course my masked crusader hero, too.

I realize today that I’ve been reading this blog regualrly for more than a year and never commented on anything. But I love it and I hope it never goes away. I never know what’s going to come next. I don’t know what you do at the CBC, Ouimet, and I really don’t care, but they should put you in charge of something.
