Well said, Anonymous – I think your broker may have advised my management regarding compensation levels recently

My broker called to say that the -40% in the market was expected and welcomed and recommended that I listen to R2 if I am somewhat anxious!

The BBM numbers for Sept 1 – Oct 26 for Radio 2 are
terrible and based on a low number of diary keepers.

Was not the point of the exercise that the numbers would go up?
Already two months into her new job and Donlon has so far managed to only come up with this very predictable “positive” spin.
It seems that she’s working from a small binder of pat answers to everything, and this one has so far cost the CBC more than $10,000. (at least, if her salary were a mere $60,000/year. Try doubling it). In other words, she’s done nothing but hang out and get comfortable.

    The BBM Spin from Donlan:

Radio TWO – overall share came in at 2.9% which is a slight drop of 15-20% overall, but this drop was exactly as EXPECTED. As you know, it takes time to build a new audience after such a radical change. These early signs are extremely promising and we look forward to continuing to grow R2 and delighting new audiences as we do.
    ——–

really, 20 percent is a ‘slight drop?’ nice try.
and who are these delighted new audiences?
are they really new? have they been polled?
do we have a focus group to consult?
no. well. sounds like BBS to me, then.

An audience dominated by “seniors and retirees” is an audience that will disappear within a decade or two; seniors and retirees have a tendency to die.

That’s why shows like Brave New Waves and Nightlines were invented in the first place, to suck in new audiences. But, alas, they’re both gone.

That’s also the motivation behind the wacky new programs on Radio 2. It’s yet to be seen if they will actually attract a new audience. So far they are alienating core listeners without replacing them with new ones.

  • Fake Ouimet says:

There has never been a time in the last decade when ’œthere won’™t be any audience left [for CBC Radio] in a couple of years,’ because the audience was dominated by seniors and retirees.

This is not an argument to accelerate the process, of course.

    Radio Two suggestion:

Re-instate the old schedule. BBM data released today shows that Two lost almost one-fifth of its audience share compared to last fall! At this rate, there won’t be any audience left in a couple of years.

    Mr. President:
The majority of managers have never listened to suggestions from the plebians who put the CBC on the air or the web. And most of the managers who did listen to their staff have taken or are taking early retirement.

Hubert, really do you think your senior managers are going to start listening now? That simply shows you don’t know your “team.”

By the way, during the last lockout the real CBC people (i.e. no managers around since they were locked in) produced a news website, radio programming, cross-country podcasts, newsletters, a concert at Massey Hall, a Bare Naked Ladies concert (and other concerts and jam sessions each week in Toronto) blogs and other stuff on ZERO budget.

But did any manager even consider asking staff how they did it once everyone was back in the offices across the country?

    Of course not.

Cancel Sophie and bring back jPod – at least jPod was pulling in a younger demographic that the Ceeb seems intent on ignoring.

And just a thought, maybe hire actual people from the Entertainment Industry regarding Programming, what the hell does a room full of lawyers and suits know about what we want to watch? On second thought, hire ME and get rid of Layfield, I’ll do her job a thousand times better for half her pay – and in cheaper High Heels.

And don’t be so nit-picky Joe. Geesh.

Hey, kids, please be more careful with your HTML.
