CBC Windsor is looking for an experienced Producer to work in the newsroom as an assignment Producer. The successful candidate will act as an integral part of the senior production team, be on the front line in collecting and organizing all material that comes into the newsroom, reach out to the local community to find stories and monitor all news sources (wires, scanners, news releases, etc) for possible stories.
The assignment Producer finds and develops local perspectives and thus local stories on national or international events, examines events and issues in other locations and uses that information to develop local stories, works with reporters on story treatmens, and maintains effective long range story files.
Windsor is one of Canada’s most active news markets, a major industrial city that has been hit hard by the troubles in the auto industry but is reinventing itself as a Green Energy Manufacturing Centre and as a Global Logistics Centre based on its strategic location as the key commercial crossing between Canada and the US.
Windsor is Canada’s furthest south city, roughly on the same parallel as the northern California border. It has extremely long, hot, sunny summers and short, warm winters with little snow (however the snow belt is within easy drive for those who like winter sports.) The Great Lakes, lots of waterways and multiple attractions make the region a summer fun spot.
The city lies two minutes drive from the American metropolis of Detroit, half an hour from the Detroit International Airport and is within easy drive of Toronto, Chicago, Toledo, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and St. Louis.
We are looking for applicants with the following:
- A university degree or equivalent combined with 5 years of related experience.
In-depth knowledge of local and national news. - Solid journalistic skills and sound news judgment
- Understanding of the various needs of radio, television and the web, ideally with expertise in more than one of these platforms.
- Bilingualism an asset.
- An extensive knowledge of Windsor and area is a significant asset.
- Ability to work in a high pressure, tight deadline environment; ability to work flexible hours, shifts and overtime is required.
- Excellent communication skills and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to work as part of the journalistic leadership team to co-create plans for coverage of big events.
- Strong leadership and organizational skills.
