Radio-Canada Alberta’s news and current affairs department is seeking an assignment producer for its newsroom. In this role, you will be responsible for determining daily coverage of Albertan affairs, newsgathering, following breaking stories throughout the production day, and conducting long-term planning. You will assign Edmonton and Calgary TV/radio reporters, as well as technical resources. Reporting to the executive producer for news and current affairs, you will work closely with the TV and radio desks. You will be responsible for liaising with and serving various local (Le téléjournal, radio newscasts and programs, website) and national (RDI, national TV news, national radio news, national programs) clients by contacting the assignment editors and desks in question
Activities:
- You have a regular and ongoing requirement to coordinate the work of others.
- Work must adhere to CBC/Radio-Canada journalistic and/or program policies, standards and practices, and you are ultimately responsible for ensuring that this occurs. Nevertheless, there is wide latitude for initiative, independent judgment and creativity.
Key Tasks:
- Determine what stories will be covered on a daily basis.
- Assign TV and radio reporters to newsgathering.
- Assign technical resources.
- Ensure Web coverage of news stories.
- Develop program content, including assigning and researching. As required, commission writing and/or research.
- Plan and organize the program or the components and/or segments of a program.
- Evaluate all facets of news production, including the performance of program and production personnel.
- Assign, coordinate and supervise the work of personnel who contribute to the program or segment for which you are responsible.
- Identify, develop and maintain contacts appropriate to the area of assignment.
- Organize and coordinate online content.
We are looking for a candidate with the following:
- University degree or the equivalent
- Minimum five years’ experience in journalism and TV/radio production
- Extensive general knowledge
- Proven track record of creativity
- Keen interest in improving newsgathering effectiveness and program content
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of regional affairs and realities, as well as the ability to quickly determine the significance of news stories
- Solid interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated team leader who can direct, perform and delegate assignments across editorial and technical lines
- Able to handle multiple priorities and simultaneous projects
- Able to plan, organize and coordinate the day-to-day work of TV and radio reporters so as to meet tight deadlines
- Able to function well in a stressful environment
- Willing to work flexible hours and overtime
- Fluency in English and French
