Job Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Digital Media, CBC News, the Managing Editor of CBCNews.ca ensures the daily and long-term achievement of CBC’s journalistic objectives on digital platforms. Plans, directs and oversees online journalistic programming, production, operations and business administration.

What you do:

  • In conjunction with the Director of Digital Media, CBC News, ensures digital news mission, goals and objectives are formulated, in place and being met, in line with CBC journalistic standards.
  • Works with the senior CBCNews.ca team to determine editorial priorities on a daily basis and to develop innovative content strategies around developing and upcoming stories.
  • Works closely with managing editors of the central newsgathering Hub and Centres to develop and implement digital programming strategies around breaking and in-depth news coverage.
  • Oversees special coverage and rollouts around online content initiatives and original/investigative/enterprise journalism.
  • Oversees editorial and technical development of new digital properties and projects, ensuring delivery on time and on budget.
  • Reviews online news content daily to make sure it meets editorial standards and targets.
  • Ensures that a formal evaluation process is in place for journalistic programming and programming values.
  • Ensures the development of cross-promotion and programming strategies and their implementation on digital platforms.
  • Champions newsroom innovation on a daily basis, in line with audience needs and expectations.
  • Works in partnership with scheduling personnel and others as needed to ensure staffing needs are met in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • In concert with the Director of Digital Media, CBC News, is responsible for all editorial human resources, including overall management of staff, career development, hiring, training, performance management and discipline.
  • Works with the Director of Digital Media, CBC News, and finance personnel to ensure that budgets are properly prepared and adhered to, and costs are tracked and controlled
  • Maintains collaborative relationships with Centres, the Hub, The National, CBC News Network and Radio News, and Digital Programming and Business Development.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships and communicates with senior News management.

What you bring:

  • Minimum of 4 years’ related experience.
  • Strong journalistic experience and knowledge of digital news production in order to lead, develop, implement, and evaluate news programming.
  • Proven ability to set digital news strategy and create the conditions necessary for success.
  • Strong understanding of media trends and their implications for CBC News’ future direction.
  • A clear commitment to CBC News’ multi-platform strategy, with creativity and vision to oversee and lead the digital news team.
  • Demonstrable leadership and management skills and experience to inspire and direct staff during periods of significant change.
  • Strong creative skills to evaluate stories, develop content ideas, and find solutions to a variety of technical, resource and operational issues.
  • Proven ability to make decisions rapidly and frequently to tight deadlines.
  • Ability to handle constantly changing and multiple priorities while juggling tasks and/or projects.
  • Personnel management skills, incorporating a deft combination of directness and sensitivity.
  • Strong analytical skills to solve complex journalistic and operational issues.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to be clear, concise, and precise on journalistic and programming matters.
  • Strong financial skills.
  • Ability to work without supervision.
  • Knowledge of the law as it relates to broadcasting and journalism.
  • Cultural sensitivity and awareness.
