CBC Manitoba is searching for a dynamic, thoughtful and insatiably curious host for our afternoon English Services Radio program that runs weekdays from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Deeply rooted in the community we serve, the afternoon show is a destination for breaking news, up-to-the-minute weather and traffic information, as well as entertainment and feature stories. The ideal candidate will have very strong on-air performance skills, be a great interviewer, a critical thinker, a strong journalist and will be deeply connected to all aspects of the community.
The host will be involved in the development, direction and execution of the program. Work is governed by CBC programming and/or journalistic policies and standards. There is, however, a requirement for creativity, initiative and independent judgment. Work regularly involves the co-ordination of the activities of others. You propose and execute program ideas, suggest and line up guests; prepare background notes and questions, interviews on or off air, and provide narration and linking continuity between program segments.
You will also interact extemporaneously with program participants such as guests and interviewees, members of the audience and phone-in callers.
As part of a highly integrated news and current affairs team, you will produce content for all platforms – network and regional – in order to best serve our audiences.
As required, you will perform the following tasks:
- Read news casts and news bulletins;
- Act as master of ceremonies, narrator or interviewer on variety, quiz, disc or other programs;
- Voice continuity for programs;
- Host other programs;
- Contribute to the network;
- Contribute to the television programming/ online as needed;
- As required, may perform any other task associated with the function of Announcer;
- Make public appearances on behalf of CBC.
What you bring:
- Strong on-air performance skills; strong and wide-ranging on-air personality;
- Strong critical thinking and interviewing skills;
- Proven journalistic ability as well as strong desk-top editing skills;
- A deep understanding of the community we serve – and you are an active participant in the community.
- A strong focus on audiences.
- Demonstrates knowledge of the broadcasting industry and an understanding and awareness of issues and events particular to the Manitoban region and the type of program being hosted;
- Strong leadership skills and self-starter, as well as proven ability to work in small, diverse teams.
- Strong understanding of public broadcasting and its role in this community.
- A minimum of five years of comparable and relevant experience.
