THE HOUR – Canada’s Late Night Talk Show – is looking for Associate Producers. Intelligent, funny, unpredictable and authentic, THE HOUR is unlike any other program on television. What you do:
With appropriate direction from one or more Producers, participate in the production, direction and/or postproduction of a program and/or program segment. Work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or program policies, practices and standards but initiative and independent judgment are required. There is often a requirement to co-ordinate the activities of others.
Key Tasks:
- Contribute ideas for program content; participate in the preparation of program objectives.
- Obtain studios, crews, lines, uplinks, remotes and other technical and production resources required by the program on behalf of all Producers and freelancers.
- Assist in developing program content including writing, researching, and/or editing.
- Prepare scripts; ensure adherence to the style and format of the program.
- Organize the participation of interviewees, creative contributors and other participants, develop background, introduction, and line of questioning, conduct or arrange for any necessary research, and ensure the briefing of hosts.
- Maintain contact files.
- Process invoices and obtain authorizing signatures as required.
- Participate in the evaluation of all aspects of the production.
As required, perform the following tasks:
- select music, sound effects and/or actuality produce program elements;
- direct a program, either live or pre-packaged, in studio or at a remote location;
assign, direct and co-ordinate the work of other personnel working on a project for which the Producer is responsible; - edit and mix, or direct the editing and mixing of audio and/or visual elements;
write continuity, edit text, edit and prepare voice-mail for broadcast; - log programs and music in appropriate information systems;
- edit, encode, digitize and package audio and video material for a website using appropriate technologies;
- assist in maintaining a level of communication or rapport with members of the audience which is both feasible and appropriate to the style and nature of the program;
- perform other production or administrative tasks associated with the smooth functioning of the newsroom, program unit or station.
What You Bring:
- University degree or equivalent work experience
- Job requires a minimum of two years’ relevant experience during which the candidate would gain exposure to journalism, computers and the technology of radio or television broadcasting.
- Must have knowledge of Canadian and International news and current affairs.
- Must have knowledge of cultural trends and issues
- Experience producing for a daily talk format
- Experience working to tight deadlines
- A solid generator of story ideas and treatments
- Solid understanding of media trends (including broadcast and online)
- Must be capable of original and creative thought in the production of television
- Must have a passion for critical thinking and innovative storytelling
- Experience producing in news and entertainmen
- Proven experience in developing lines of questioning, writing focused introductions and preparing and writing tape segments
- Familiarity with network television production and editing techniques
- Experience working with tape and the ability to think creatively with visuals
- Ability to write clearly and concisely
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are required
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, overtime and weekends as required.
- Excellent organizational skills.
- Must be able to solve problems independently and in-group discussions
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Independent, self-motivated and self-sufficient
- Open to new ideas and approaches
- Must be able to work to deadline
- Bilingualism an asset
