CBC/Radio-Canada is seeking an energetic, flexible, and self-motivated professional to fill the position of Media Librarian in the Libraries, Archives & Documentation Department in Winnipeg. The successful candidate will provide specialized library and information services to program and administrative clients.

The Role:

As a Media Librarian, your primary objective will be the acquisition, selection and circulation of visual resource materials and for their cataloguing into an internal online database. As a valued team member you will respond to research requests from production by providing program material and/or research information in a variety of formats and when necessary provide advice to clients on copyright status of library materials and information for copyright clearance purposes. In this role you may also contribute to thesaurus construction and its use.

Responsibilities:

This position will provide the incumbent with the opportunity to work with a variety of internal clients including Producers, Researchers, on-air personnel and others, by assisting them in the selection of material from the Visual Resource Library.

As a Media Librarian, you will also be responsible for:

  • Establishing and maintaining a cataloguing system to manage and ensure appropriate circulation of library material
  • Conducting research, preparing detailed summaries of the content of programs and/or library holdings
  • Providing program material and/or research information on demand and assisting Producers, Researchers, on-air personnel and others in the selection of material and the use of the library
  • Selecting and purchasing material for retention in the library and preparing appropriate documentation to ensure payment
  • Advising program production personnel on the availability of broadcast materials and providing assistance in obtaining items not available in the library
  • Ensuring the safety, security, preservation, maintenance and availability of broadcast materials and related documents or photographs and recommending replacement and/or new purchases
  • Managing the disposition and removal of broadcast materials when authorized to do so and operating equipment required to perform library tasks
  • Screening broadcast material and selecting stock footage, preparing shot lists, classifying and indexing materialtime checking records, tapes, compact discs, videodiscs and other pre-recorded sources of program material

We are looking for a candidate that has the following:

  • A post-secondary university degree in archival science, library techniques or records management and a minimum of two years comparable or relevant experience.
  • Experience and/or post secondary education in the field of journalism would be an asset.
  • A Masters in Library Science (MLS) will be considered a very strong asset.
  • Strong understanding of computer/information technology, including databases as they relate to libraries
  • Experience in computerized circulation systems including bar coding, user identification and loan policies.
  • Knowledge of television production including the medium of storage would be an asset.
  • Knowledge of news, current affairs, history, arts and cultural events.
  • Experience with a broad range of information resources for consultation and verification.
  • Visual acuity and an understanding of the vocabulary of images.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Ablility to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and organize workflow
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to train clients using library tools

NOTE: Every eligible candidate must write entrance exams and a pass mark of 60% is required to appear before a Selection Board. Please indicate if you’ve written/succeeded the CBC entrance exams.
