What’s the role?

Provide front-line support to CBC editorial and production staff across the country and around the world. you will trouble-shoot hardware, software and control room problems and take appropriate corrective action to ensure continuous use of editorial and production tools. Clients include Network, Current Affairs, CBC News Network ,Radio and online news personnel .

Clients are located in domestic, regional, and foreign bureaus and production centres. iNEWS, their primary production tool, is a multi functional newsroom application used to view and search wire stories, build and time program rundowns, write and electronically prompt scripts and drive control room automation.

Activities:

  • Responsible for front-line support for the AVID iNews newsroom system and peripheral applications and devices.
  • Document and resolve problems for all operating, hardware and/or production related problems.
  • Provides support and training for enterprise desktop video production system (Avid Interplay)
  • Provide consultation to editorial and production personnel on the use of newsroom applications, computer hardware and related duties – Provides editorial and production training to individuals or groups on the efficient use of the AVID iNews newsroom system and other production software tools.
  • Identifies and initiates efficiencies in editorial and production workflows through the use of newsroom software applications and automation ed machine control interfaces. (e.g. Teleprompting, MOS automation, VizRT and Still Store devices.).
  • Participates in establishing standards and operational procedures to reduce unnecessary support costs.

Qualifications:

  • University degree or College certificate in journalism, computer science or customer relations or 2-3 years of equivalent professional experience.
  • Knowledge of Media Production processes and CBC business practices a definite asset.
  • Knowledge of Television Production processes an asset.
  • Experience with departmental systems, including AVID iNews, an asset.
  • Working knowledge of networking technology and UNIX commands as it relates to administration of newsroom server application.
  • Proven experience troubleshooting in a Windows XP environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral (English).
  • Bilingualism is an asset.
  • Must be innovative and resourceful in resolving operational and technological problems.
  • Exercise independent judgment, initiative and problem-solving techniques.
    Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding of PCs, laptops and related networking equipment.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, guide and advise individuals in a diverse group.
  • Must have excellent public relations skills to deal with frustrated users working under tight deadlines.
  • Accuracy and attention to detail is essential.
  • Ability to work with regular interruptions and considerable pressure due to production deadlines.

Additional Requirements:

  • Involves shift work (days and/or evenings/overnights/weekends/statutory holidays).
  • Required to work unforeseen overtime or travel on company business.
  • Requires being available by pager or cell phone.
