Ottawa English regional radio at CBC/Radio-Canada is looking to fill a reporter-editor position with an energetic and self-motivated candidate who will work to advance the goals of CBC News. The ideal candidate will have a desire for personal growth and self-development and be an enthusiastic supporter of the strategic objectives of CBC News Ottawa. This is general assignment position with additional responsibilities for reporting on the Francophone communities on both sides of the Ottawa river.

Duties:

  • You will perform reporting and editorial assignments related to the investigating, researching, gathering, writing and presenting of news and current affairs stories in a variety of formats, including newscasts and current affairs programs, and on a variety of platforms (not just Radio but TV and online as well.)
  • The successful candidate will be flexible and be able to work a variety of shifts, including some night and early-morning shifts.
  • Work is governed by CBC journalistic and programming policies and standards. Advice and guidance are regularly available but there is latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
  • There may be opportunity to co-ordinate the work of others and close co-operation with the other members of the newsroom is essential.

Your Profile:

  • University degree or equivalent.
  • Three years of directly related experience that includes proven ability in radio and television broadcasting.
  • Bilingualism (English/French) essential. Strong abilities to report in both English and French.
  • Demonstrated ability to research and gather information from a variety of sources.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce original journalism.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide live on-air reports, debriefs, interviews and analysis of complex events.
  • Demonstrated excellence in writing for radio.
  • Strong on-air performance.
  • Demonstrated ability to work comfortably in digital news gathering, editing and presenting.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in an integrated radio/television/online environment.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in a variety of presentation forms.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in producing compelling audio packages of varying lengths.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet on-air deadlines.
  • Strong news sense.
  • Knowledge of CBC/Radio-Canada regional and local programming.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the strategic objectives of CBC news a strong asset.
    Strong technical and production skills and an aptitude for computer editing and mixing.
  • Knowledge and understanding of CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices an asset.
  • A strong knowledge of Ottawa-Gatineau and the issues important to the region, specifically the west Quebec region. Strong journalist with sound editorial judgment.
  • Curiosity and imagination.
  • Critical thinking and analytical abilities.
  • Sense of humour.
  • Solid people skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and to work cooperatively with other CBC media lines: CBC English and French, Radio and Television, online.
  • Strong ability to network and make new contacts.

  • An ability to present material with credibility and authority.
  • Able to work well under pressure and handle multiple priorities simultaneously, working to tight deadlines.
  • Availability to work whenever required, including on weekends, given the unexpected nature of news events and the resulting need for overtime.
  • Ability to contribute effectively as part of a team.
  • Willingness to work cooperatively with producers and colleagues in story development and writing.
  • An open mind, a flexible attitude and focused desire to meet the needs of the Ottawa audience.
  • Enthusiastic support for the strategic objectives of CBC News Ottawa as it responds to the overall strategy for CBC News.
