This just in: Tie Domi to figure-skate

Nobody else on the straight-guy axis of Battle of the Blades is of even remote interest. But they’re still the stars of the show, since their names have been announced while their figure-skatrix partners remain unconfirmed.

Does CBC really think hockey dudes are the audience for this show?

I think that one object of this is to show that the prejugement of male figure skaters being gay is pure nonesens! That the glitter spandex and fairy skating is a false pretense to figure skating!! It will show what figure skaters really go through!

    Based on what, Kev?

The fundamental dishonesty of the concept.

The dichotomy between professional hockey players and figure skaters is not one of paragons of manhood‒œcum‒œgoons versus girly, sparkle-dressed figure skatrixen. The true dynamic is between the NHLers and the flaming gay-male skaters. An honest show would pit Tie Domi against the flamers.

The dishonesty continues in releasing the names of the manly NHLers first, forgetting the girls entirely, and installing Ron MacLean as host. Do they even know what they’re doing? Can they coherently explain the concept of the show? If so, I ask again: Are straight-guy hockey fans really the audience, as the announcements suggest?

And we all have such fond memories of CBC’s other foray into hockey “reality television,” Making the Cut, do we not?

Additionally, you may have revealed more than you expected in admitting your bloodlust, or at least your fracturelust. In retrospect, we expected nothing less of you.

factual entertainment's decent audiences have almost all come from format buys. Let's see how the creative braintrust fares with something of their own making …

So just to recap – completely Canadian cast, contrasts stereotypical masculine and feminine roles in Canadian culture, has potential to be eye-crossingly painfully embarrassing to watch (always good in a reality show), and there's a good chance someone will break a limb or a neck on primetime TV. And Factual has tended to deliver decent audiences in the past, given half a chance (ie. the TTNs before they started getting buried in the schedule, the last season of DD).

And you think that it's a fail? Based on what?

LOL @ anonymous. You are soooo "on the mark". What a disaster of an idea. And, who else would even consider giving Domi a job?!?!?!?!? Oh yeah, the CBC….tsk, tsk.

Hot damn, another gem from the Layfield/Wilson/Bristow factory of excellence.

Toss in Ron James and have Mesley host it.
