Reelin’ in the years (1)

A trip through some of the good shit at CBC Archives. Because such a useful and fascinating project couldn’t possibly get its funding cut.

(That’s CBC Archives, by the way – the site that’s almost impossible to find from the CBC homepage. I’m not talking about Archive Sales – and don’t try loading that latter site in anything but IE6.)

“That’s Jack Layton‽”

Old video still frame of Jack Layton with full head of dark-brown hair and full brown moustache

Yup. Cringe along with us as we examine the youthful countenance of each of the five (“major”) party leaders. Yeesh – Liz May looks like a bobbysoxer.

I heard that the separate funding for the archives site has been yanked, but CBC is still deciding what to do with the site. Pulling the plug would indeed be stupid – I agree, it’s great to peruse, and heck, it’s programming we’ve already paid for. You never know, they *could* do the right thing….

It’s sooooo typical ceeb to sink a bunch of money into something, then cut it.

Okay, here’s a survey: how many times have you seen people sent off for training, then laid off/fired/forced to quit soon after?

The funding has indeed been yanked. So what is the future of the Archives project?

It’s so very useful, and great to peruse.

That promo slot’s pretty much dedicated to Archives, apparently (though I wouldn’t want to say that it’s never been bumped). Wayback’s most recent version of the page is from Feb 11 2008 and shows it in place.

And while I’m not denying the possibility of a conspiracy out to get you, if it does exist then I’m not part of it. These days I’m more of a Timothy’s man anyway.

Come back next week and see if it’s inaccurate, Kev. Or go back a couple of weeks.

Someday, some · friggin’ · day, you, OtherKev, and Derek will skip giddily over to the Starbucks kitty-corner to Fort Dork and finally be able to triumphantly exclaim “We got ’im!” But not today.

I like to be accurate, but sometimes I’m not. Just like you.

There’s an Archives promo in the list of 5 just below the fold. It’s actually got higher placement than the radio and TV schedule sections. I’d say it’s fairly easy to find, and definitely easier than Archive Sales, which only has a small link in the footer.

(This is not to say that I like the homepage design, because I don’t. But your description of it is inaccurate.)
